1. Introduction
The Delhi Sultanate was an important period in medieval Indian history. It lasted from 1206 CE to 1526 CE and ruled large parts of the Indian subcontinent.
During this period several Muslim dynasties ruled from Delhi and introduced new administrative systems, military organization and cultural influences in India.
2. Foundation of the Delhi Sultanate
The Delhi Sultanate was established by Qutb-ud-din Aibak in 1206 CE after the death of Muhammad Ghori. He became the first Sultan of Delhi and founded the Slave or Mamluk dynasty.
Qutb-ud-din Aibak began the construction of the famous Qutub Minar in Delhi.
3. Major Dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate
Five major dynasties ruled the Delhi Sultanate.
- Slave (Mamluk) Dynasty – 1206 to 1290
- Khilji Dynasty – 1290 to 1320
- Tughlaq Dynasty – 1320 to 1414
- Sayyid Dynasty – 1414 to 1451
- Lodi Dynasty – 1451 to 1526
4. Important Rulers
Several important rulers governed the Delhi Sultanate.
- Iltutmish – strengthened the Sultanate
- Razia Sultan – the first and only woman ruler of Delhi
- Alauddin Khilji – known for military expansion and market reforms
- Muhammad bin Tughlaq – famous for ambitious but controversial policies
- Firoz Shah Tughlaq – built canals and public works
5. Administration
The Delhi Sultanate had a strong centralized administration. The Sultan was the supreme ruler and controlled the army, administration and taxation.
Officials were appointed to manage provinces and maintain law and order.
6. Economy and Trade
Trade and agriculture played an important role in the economy of the Sultanate. Many cities developed as important trade centres.
Market regulations and price control policies were introduced especially during the reign of Alauddin Khilji.
7. Architecture
The Delhi Sultanate period witnessed the development of Indo-Islamic architecture.

- Alai Darwaza
- Tughlaqabad Fort
These monuments represent the architectural achievements of this period.
8. Decline of the Delhi Sultanate
The Delhi Sultanate gradually weakened because of internal conflicts and external invasions.
In 1526 CE Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat and established the Mughal Empire in India.
