Ancient History – Chapter 5 Post Mauryan Period

1. Introduction

The period after the fall of the Mauryan Empire is known as the Post-Mauryan Period. It lasted roughly from the 2nd century BCE to the 3rd century CE and was marked by the rise of many regional kingdoms. During this time India did not have one large empire like the Mauryas but several smaller powers ruled different regions.

2. Shunga Dynasty

The Shunga dynasty was founded by Pushyamitra Shunga in 185 BCE after he overthrew the last Mauryan ruler Brihadratha.

  • Founder – Pushyamitra Shunga
  • Capital – Pataliputra
  • Period – 185 BCE to 73 BCE

The Shungas ruled large parts of northern and central India and revived many Vedic traditions.

3. Kanva Dynasty

After the fall of the Shunga dynasty, the Kanva dynasty came to power. It was founded by Vasudeva Kanva around 73 BCE.

  • Founder – Vasudeva Kanva
  • Capital – Pataliputra
  • Period – 73 BCE to 28 BCE

The Kanva dynasty ruled for a short period before being replaced by other regional powers.

4. Indo-Greek Rulers

During the Post-Mauryan period, several foreign rulers entered north-western India. The Indo-Greeks were among the most important of these rulers.

The most famous Indo-Greek king was Menander, also known as Milinda. He is known for his dialogue with the Buddhist monk Nagasena recorded in the book Milindapanha.

5. Kushan Empire

The Kushan Empire was another powerful kingdom during this period. The most famous ruler of the Kushans was Kanishka.

  • Capital – Purushapura (present-day Peshawar)
  • Important ruler – Kanishka

Kanishka supported Buddhism and helped spread it across Central Asia and China.

6. Culture and Trade

The Post-Mauryan period witnessed important developments in art, culture and trade. The Gandhara school of art developed during this period and showed a mixture of Indian and Greek artistic styles.

Trade between India and Central Asia also increased significantly during this time.

7. Importance of the Post Mauryan Period

  • Rise of many regional kingdoms
  • Spread of Buddhism and cultural exchanges
  • Development of new art styles like Gandhara art
  • Expansion of trade routes

Although the Mauryan Empire collapsed, this period played an important role in shaping the cultural and political development of ancient India.
